What are AI credits?

What AI credits are, which Chameleon AI features use them, how to see your balance and usage, and how to buy more

Written by Chameleon Team

Some of Chameleon's AI features run on credits. One credit is one AI action, for example, a single user summary, or a single Adaptive follow-up question. Your balance, your usage, and the controls for what you can spend credits all live on your Account page.

Availability & usage

🔐 Available on all plans

🧑‍💼 Anyone can view your balance and usage; only Admins can change what spends credits

📍 Applies to Compass and Prism

⚙️ Manage from AccountCredits

What uses my credits?

Two of Chameleon's four AI Agents consume credits, and each action costs exactly one credit.

What happens

Credits used

Compass writes a Session Summary — one per user, per visit

1

Compass writes a Profile Summary — one per user, rolled up over time

1

Prism generates an Adaptive follow-up question in a Microsurvey

1

Every credit-consuming action costs the same: one credit. There is no variable pricing based on feature, model, or output length.

What doesn't use credits?

  • Copilot: every conversation, including through MCP. Never consumes credits, however much you use it.

  • Ranger: the automated or manual jobs never consume credits.

👉 Because Copilot and Ranger are never metered, there's no reason to hold back on using them to protect your balance.

What can I do with my credits?

Because one credit is one action, your balance reads directly as a number of AI actions.

Your balance

What that buys

100 credits

100 user summaries, or 100 Adaptive follow-up questions

10,000 credits

10,000 AI actions, in any mix

25,000 credits

25,000 AI actions, in any mix

How fast will I get through them? It depends on what you use.

  • With Profile Summaries only (how most accounts start) a typical account uses around 850 credits a month.

  • With Session Summaries switched on, usage is higher because one is generated for each user on each visit. Check the estimated monthly cost shown next to the toggle in "AI Controls" before turning it on.

💡 Your Credits tab shows your real usage by day and by product, so you can see your own rate rather than working from an estimate.

Where do I see my balance and usage?

Go to AccountCredits. You'll find:

  1. Your current credit balance

  2. Your usage this month and last month

  3. A 30-day chart, split by Compass and Prism

  4. A breakdown by Experience, showing which of your Experiences consumed credits

Where did my starting credits come from?

If you've been on a paid Chameleon subscription before we launched AI Cretids, you received a one-off balance of free credits.

  • These credits don't expire. There's no clock on them.

  • It was a one-time grant, not a monthly allowance. Your balance won't refresh at the start of next month.

👉 Your starting credits appear on the Credits tab labeled "AI credits included with your plan."

What happens if I run out of credits?

Nothing you already have is lost, and nothing needs re-enabling.

  • Compass stops writing new summaries. Every summary that has already been written stays and keeps working.

  • Prism Microsurveys stay published and keep running; respondents simply get your default Thank-you step instead of an Adaptive Follow-up.

  • Both resume automatically as soon as your balance is positive again.

How do I buy more credits?

You can buy credits yourself from AccountCredits

  1. Select Add More on the Credits tab

  2. Choose a package

  3. Continue to checkout (the payment is handled on Stripe's own secure page)

  4. Your credits are added to your balance as soon as the payment succeeds

You can also switch on automatic top-ups, which buy a package again when your balance falls below a threshold you set.

Key takeaways

  • One credit is one AI action, and every action costs the same

  • Only Compass and Prism use credits. Copilot and Ranger never do

  • Your starting credits don't expire, but they were a one-time grant rather than a monthly allowance

  • Running out never removes anything you already have, and everything resumes when you top up

  • Balance, usage, and per-Experience breakdown all live on AccountCredits
